April 6 - There's something about that date...

After months of preparation, opening night is finally here. For everyone, it seems like it has all been a blur. There is a definite air of anticipation all around town. Articles in all of the area newspapers, spots on TV newscasts, radio ads - dozens and dozens of students ready to give the performance of their lives, whether on stage, in the orchestra pit, or on the tech crew. The costume designers will have their creations see the light of day in front of the hundreds attending the first performance. Notes of encouragement are coming from local and abroad, as far away as England. At the heart of it all, a dedicated group of teachers proudly see their students transformed from what was only 8 months ago a simple group of high school kids into a mature, close-knit team ready to give their all.

Good luck to everyone - THIS - IS - IT !!!

March 28 - Holiday? What Holiday?

Well, the scene has now shifted to Rez for the last set of (intense) rehearsals. While most students were enjoying yet another day off from school (did you know that there were NO full school weeks in March???), the cast and crw of Les Mis has notched it up another gear, with an all-day rehearsal at Resurrection C. S. S. From here on in, it's nothing but adrenalin and work.

March 20 - Open (ware)House for Sets!

The "WOW" factor moved up yet another notch today at the open house held at the warehouse to show off the almost completed sets for Les Mis. Students and teachers hosted an afternoon-long drop in at the construction warehouse for family and friends. The hard work and dedication of the tech crew and set designers was evident for all to see today. It is clear that the those attending performances will be experiencing something truly magical. Photos from the open house are now on the pictures page.

March 14 - It gets KOOLer Every Day

Listen to the radio commercial here!

This spot will be running on KOOL-FM, 105.3.

March 14 - the Buzz Continues...

The buzz continues today as we are inside the "1-month to curtain" mark. Today's Life section of the KW-Record (subscription required) gave a great overview of the efforts being put into this from many angles. Several students and Mr. Hoch were interviewed and there are a couple of great full colour pictures. The webmaster is attempting to see if we can get permission to reproduce any of the content in this space (Denied, unfortunately).

February 6 - Les Miz Promotion goes on the Road!

Les Mis promotion has "gone on the road" ... quite literally. The 48 foot official "rolling billboard" ( after having been parked at RIM all weekend ) will move to Rez on Monday, Feb 7th for the week. . It will then "tour" the region until showtime hitting all of our 5 Catholic highschool during the week. It will then be delivered to the local malls, shopping centres and strategic city arteries on the weekends. A big, big thanks to Mike McLean of Hireterch Industries for coming up with the idea ... and then seeing it through to final delivery. Keep your eyes open for "Waif" as she promotes to the community what we are doing in our schools in the arts programs. Click on the photo for a larger version (130KB).

January 30 - Countdown Continues!

It seems like magic is in the air as the Les Miserables countdown continues. Opening night, April 6th, is in fact just around the corner.

Energy and enthusiasm continue to build as set construction, props, costumes and makeup plans gather momentum and swing into high gear. Lumber dots the Rez stage awaiting its transformation into 19th century tables, chairs or window frames. Volunteers are contributing time and energy to painting the huge prison-like backdrop while the costume department sews endless hoop skirts and fancy hats. Peasant costumes, with their simple appearance, still require specific details to make them authentic to the time period. March Break will literally be a working holiday for the vast numbers of people involved "back stage" in the production . Vocal coaching continues at each rehearsal along with fine tuning the orchestra Blocking, movement and dance numbers likewise are gelled by our artistic director, Mr Allan Hoch and his choreographer assistant, Ms Michelle Bergauer.

Radio adverting is imminent as ticket are expected to sell out for this fantastic student production. Even Centre in the Square staff are eagerly awaiting working with talented tech students on lighting and set construction. Excitement and anticipation for an actual dress rehearsal in a real theatre exudes from very fibre of every cast member. You can only imagine their feelings about the actual performance dates of April 6, 7, 8 and 9.

Showcasing the performance for the first time occurred in December when a group of 35 cast members gathered at the Board Office luncheon to sing a medley of Les Mis tunes. Preview showcases featuring each school's cast members will also be occurring in February. These previews are planned at the high schools to whet appetites and promote the show to their peers. Much time energy and effort has gone into the organizing and implementation of these previews by dedicated staff members, Ms Beth wolf, Mrs. Jennifer Rodrigues and Mrs. Carole Aldworth who want to build confidence and see the students shine.

The latest activity, the weekend of January 29 /30, saw leads Kevin White ( Javert ), Ryan Bondy ( Jean Vajlean ), David Reitzel ( Marius), Andrew Lima ( Javert ) and Joe Micallef (Thenardier) working with Mr Hoch and the tech team swinging hammers, measuring wood, painting flats and constructing sets. Hey … and we thought all these guys could do was sing!!!

Ticket sales are escalating and so avoid disappointment by getting your today. Call the Centre in the Square are box office at 578-1570 to reserve good seats. Your support of the arts of WCDSB and the students themselves will be greatly appreciated.

PS Keep your eyes wide open as you are driving because the symbolic Les Mis "WAIF" will be visible in the area very shortly. She will appear as part of our media advertising campaign on the sides of a 48' X 8' black tractor trailer ( courtesy of Hiretech Industries ) … and will be making the rounds of Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge shopping malls, parking lots, schools and prime locations near highways and main arteries. Spot the waif … and tell your friends. Keep spreading the good news about our fantastic production.

January 30 - Webmaster found ALIVE!

A busy January has kept the site pretty static for the last few weeks. I'm addressing the backlog now. Some additional photos have been added to the site, including shots from the August workshop.

November 15th - COSTUMES, COSTUMES, COSTUMES

Now that we have storage space we CAN continue the costume collection. Some tips on what is most useful:

  • dark coloured ( navy, black, brown, gray ) skirts,
  • dark pants ( wool-like fabrics )
  • white / beige blouses or shirts ( peasant style, long or ¾ sleeves )
  • work boots / shoes ( dark colours , well worn, some with buckles )
  • fabric ( to make costumes … dark colours for peasants OR silky, dressy bright blue, red or green or yellow etc for the wedding scene … and the “lovely ladies” … OR beige /cream oxford cloth for aprons, table covers, curtains )
  • lace, trims, brass buttons, dark belts, feathers, elastic, etc
NOT useful unfortunately … logo t-shirts and sweatshirts ( eg Mickey Mouse, Camp Tinkerbelle or Syd’s Cycle Shop), turtle necks or anything modern for that matter. ( Remember we are set in 1850 … and the people were very poor. ) Costume donations can be dropped off with a cast member at Sunday rehearsals or at the family of schools high school.

November 15th - MAKE-UP, MAKE-UP, MAKE-UP

Is there anyone out there who might have access or leads to some FREE Avon, Mary Kay, Cover Girl, etc makeup samples: foundations, lipsticks, mascaras, blush or face moisturizers or removers ??? We would be very grateful for any donations / contributions that we could use at our make-up in-services prior to dress rehearsal.

For health reasons each chorus member will require his/ her own make-up. Small samples would be perfect for this.

Call our Les Mis hotline ( at 501-8034 ) and leave a message if you can help out.

November 8th - "Take 2"

“Take 2” was the wonderful Les Mis experience of Sunday’s rehearsal when the 2 components of the production – the chorus and the orchestra were put together for the very first time.  Using the St David cafeteria as a combined stage and orchestra pit both sections of the company combined their talents to rehearse the first quarter of the show concert style.  The orchestra though had a hard time concentrating on the music because they wanted to watch the actors. The chorus had an equally hard time focusing on the songs because they wanted to listen to the orchestra.  However, by the end of the afternoon thunderous peer applause signaled that both groups had done a super job. “It was totally awesome,” one cast member said to her friend commenting on the new experience of singing accompanied at last by more than just a piano.

Energy and enthusiasm was abundantly evident as 130 young people continued to bring the Victor Hugo classic to life.  Throughout the whole afternoon the double cast leads and supporting vocalists developed the personas of their characters. It was amazing to listen and watch as each actor became more comfortable with his/her 19th century French  counterpart.  It was hard work today blocking strategic moves  and ironing out wrinkles for the best  staging effect.

Singing with the orchestra made the rehearsal seem more real. It brought home the fact that in just 5 short months the students will actually be performing live on stage at Centre in the Square. While the end goal is ever present in the minds of the cast, the journey to get there is a fabulous growth experience for everyone.

October 25 - Update

“Totally awesome” and “amazing” are only two of the many positive descriptors of the ambitious WCDSB production of Victor Hugo’s classic,  Les Miserables.  This student version scheduled to run April 6,7,8 and 9th at Kitchener’s Centre in the Square,  boasts  an onstage cast of 100 students with an additional 25  in the orchestra. Mr. Allan Hoch, the artistic director, and Mrs. Jennifer Rodrigues, the musical director, have only the highest praise for the talent, commitment and dedication of this wonderful group of young people. Even the scales sound wonderful as the soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices combine in melodic harmony.

With the rich wealth of student talent the directors have successfully double cast the 11 principal roles. The company consists of students from our 5 secondary schools as well as the elementary panel.

Excitement has been in the air from the very beginning of auditions last May . The Les Mis prep summer camp in August provided an excellent opportunity for team building and bonding. The September and October rehearsals have been extremely successful with cast and orchestra learning new music and practising individual and chorus parts. Full company rehearsals continue every Sunday until show time.

Tickets are now on sale at The Centre in the Square box office. Prices start at $18.50 and range upward to $36.50. Adult and students prices are available as well.  “Anyone interested in attending this outstanding performance is encouraged to get tickets early as a sell out is expected”, said co-producer Beth Wolf. Tickets make great Christmas gifts while supporting the arts in our schools.

October 24 - Farewell Monsignor Doyle

Cast and crew bid a fond farewell to Monsignor Doyle High School this past Sunday. All enjoyed a feast fit for both slaves and kings. The rehearsal scene now shifts to St. David's.
